Pronouns: she/hers
Deepa Natarajan spent 15 years as a Museum Educator and Public Program Coordinator for the University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley. During this time, she had the unique opportunity to transform her love of plants into a year-round series of classes, workshops, exhibits, tours, and events such as the Redwood Grove Concert series, the Green Gala, the Fiber & Dye exhibit, and Fall Harvest Dinner.
During Jane Goodall’s visit to the Botanical Garden in 2015, Natarajan helped create a self-guided walking tour of the collection’s numerous plant-animal stories.
With an undergraduate degree in Medical Anthropology from Boston University, she developed a fascination with the relationship between plants and people. Over the course of her professional career, she has travelled to her family’s homeland of Tamil Nadu many times to study natural dyes, medicinal plants, and classical dance. In 2018, she journeyed to England to pursue a master’s degree in ethnobotany from the University of Kent in association with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
Her interdisciplinary interests span a variety of ethnobotanical topics from medicinal, dye, ritual, and food plants, to knowledge systems, phytochemistry, and traveling cultures.
After relocating to Portland in 2020, Natarajan accepted a position as Admissions Director at Arbor School of Arts & Sciences, a K-8 independent school founded on the belief that education is enduring to the extent it cultivates intellect, character, and creativity. The Arbor campus is set on 22 acres of beautiful, wooded farmland in Tualatin with incredible plants and trees, including a dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). She is excited to share her love of plants with the Arbor community and has already been found making wreaths with parents, dyeing basketry fibers, teaching on ancient Egyptian ethnobotany, making leaf prints, and discussing the significance of rice in the cultures of Asia with Arbor students.
