EPA signs Prospective Purchaser Agreement with Portland Botanical Gardens. Hooray! This pride month, we’re putting a spotlight on the Pride of Madeira (Echium candicans, formerly Echium fastuosum). Madeira Island is the largest and most populous island of the Madeira archipelago, located in the North Atlantic Ocean, north of the Canary Islands and south of the Azores. Now an autonomous region of Portugal, the previously uninhabited archipelago was colonized by the Portuguese in the 1400s. The settlers chose the name Madeira after the Portuguese word for “wood,” because of the extensive lush subtropical evergreen forests covering most of the main island.
