Weeding and litter pickup at the McCormick & Baxter Superfund site
Thank you to all who attended the Spring Landcare event last Saturday, April 11th, at the McCormick & Baxter Superfund site.
The weather was perfect, with a morning shower ending promptly before our start. Twenty-six people attended the three-hour work party to pick up trash and remove invasive plants.
Together, we made it a very productive morning and accomplished the following:
- Filled twelve trash bags with litter.
- Hauled out busted deck chairs and a broken shopping cart.
- Dug out the roots and crowns of blackberry brambles (Rubus armeniacus), removing dozens of plants and clearing out three large clusters.
- Cut down over a hundred scotch broom bushes (Cytisus scoparius)
- Pulled plenty of Portuguese ivy (Hedera hibernica).
The morning rewarded our efforts with a few memorable wildlife sightings as well, including:
- an osprey carrying its fish breakfast
- a sea lion surfacing right off the shoreline
- a paper wasp tending a nest on a leaf.
Well worth it!
