In western Oregon, we have a mediterranean climate, which means we have dry summers and mild, damp winters. While we get the occasional winter storm, it’s still significantly more mild than the Columbia Gorge or even Northern Washington. This allows us to grow plants from similar climates around the world.
A Rare Climate
Mediterranean climates represent one of the smaller and more unique botanical realms on the planet, and we’re lucky to live on the northern edge of one. These displays will give visitors a better understanding of how these plants function in their environment and communities. They will also highlight potential introductions to our own climate. Due to their dry summer needs, Mediterranean plants provide the best possible opportunities for water-wise gardening in Portland and our surrounding cities.
