Plant of the Week - Lilium lancifolium . Lilium l Plant of the Week - Lilium lancifolium
.
Lilium lancifolium, also known as tiger lily, is an orange, unscented true lily originating from Guam, China, Korea, and Japan. While its common name is “tiger lily,” a handful of lily species are also referred to by the same name.
.
L. lancifolium is easy to grow in the garden and can at times become weedy or escape cultivation. This species produces small bulbs in the leaf axils called bulbils that fall to the ground and can help to create clumps in the garden.
.
Multiple forms of this lily exist, including the double-flowered ‘Flore Pleno’ and a yellow flowered variant (L. lancifolium var. flaviflorum).

We’ve begun working with our architecture partne We’ve begun working with our architecture partners to develop updated renderings and sketches for 2023!
.
In the meantime, here’s a fourth, previously never-before-seen sketch from Rick Potestio’s early conservatory concepts.
.
While we hope these early sketches from March 2021 help you imagine what a modern, show-stopping conservatory complex could look like in the city, the actual structure’s design will be informed by the landscape around it.
.

What is a composite flower? . A composite flower i What is a composite flower?
.
A composite flower is made up of many smaller, often simpler flowers that together appear to be one large, single flower. This type of flower is characteristic of Asteraceae, or the Aster family.
.
Sunflowers are notable examples of a composite flower structure. What we think of as a single flower actually consists of two types of floral bodies: ray flowers and disk flowers. Disk flowers are found in the center of a sunflower and don’t have petals. Ray flowers can be seen around the perimeter of a sunflower and contain one, large petal. The intricate combination of these ray and disk flowers is what we call a composite.

Plant of the Week - Spiranthes porrifolia . Spira Plant of the Week - Spiranthes porrifolia
.
Spiranthes porrifolia, also known as Western ladies’ tresses, is a terrestrial orchid species native to the Pacific Northwest and California. This orchid species thrives in areas where there is a permanent source of water. It is often found in damp meadows, along streams, or near seeps. These particular plants were spotted in the Columbia Gorge.
.
S. porrifolia can be seen blooming in July and August with flowers being creamy to yellow-colored. The specific epithet “porrifolia” comes from the Latin “porrum/porri” meaning leek-shaped.
.
About 25 species of Spiranthes orchids are found globally in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

No. 25 - Lachenalia viridiflora Flora of the Weste No. 25 - Lachenalia viridiflora
Flora of the Western Cape
Commemorative Series - December 2021
.
Lachenalia viridiflora, sometimes called Viooltjie or turquoise hyacinth, is a winter-flowering bulbous plant that is critically endangered in its native habitat. While bulbs of this species are widely available in the horticultural trade, construction has continued to threaten wild populations.
.
In the wild, this species thrives in granite outcrops where depressions cause the soil to become waterlogged during winter. L. viridiflora is pollinated by southern double-collared sunbirds (Cinnyris chalybeus), which have curved beaks that fit into the tubular flowers of Lachenalia.
.
Legend has it that Khoisan peoples of the Cape, as well as settlers, would rub two leaves together and it would squeak like a little instrument. It is because of this that the regional common name Viooltjie was given, meaning “tiny violin”.

Plant of the Week - Brodiaea coronaria . Brodiaea Plant of the Week - Brodiaea coronaria
.
Brodiaea coronaria, also known as the early harvest Brodiaea or garland Brodiaea, is an herbaceous perennial that grows from an underground corm. Its native range spans from British Columbia to California. B. coronaria is the type-species for the genus, meaning that it’s the plant from which the genus description is based.
.
Two subspecies of B. coronaria are currently recognized in its native range. The least common subspecies is B. coronaria ssp. rosea, which is a rare, pink-flowered form that’s only found in parts of California.
.
B. coronaria can be found growing in grasslands, prairies, balds, and open hillsides where there is not a lot of overhead competition by trees and brush. Blooming April through July depending on location, blueish-purple lily-like flowers offer colors not commonly found in these landscapes.

Plant of the Week - Darlingtonia californica . Da Plant of the Week - Darlingtonia californica
.
Darlingtonia californica (#11), also known as the Californica pitcherplant, is a carnivorous plant which grows in cool water bogs, seeps, and streams in Oregon and northern California. D. californica is monotypic, meaning that it is the only species in the genus Darlingtonia.
.
Serpentine soils are characteristic of some parts of Southern Oregon and Northern California. These soils are low in calcium, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, but high in magnesium, making them inhospitable for many plant species. Serpentine can also contain higher amounts of heavy metals. Darlingtonia, while not requiring serpentine soils to grow, have adapted to low soil nutrient conditions by consuming insects to supplement poor nutrients from the soil.
.
The plant lures insects into a small hole on the underside of its hood and insects are disoriented upon entering by “windows” at the top of the pitcher which allow light through. Exhausted, they fall into digestive fluid within the pitcher and are slowly digested by the plant.
