For a while, the genus Scadoxus was considered to be a subgenus of Haemanthus (South African bulbs) but in 1976 the two genera were split due to differences in growth habit, physical characteristics, native range, and chromosome count. While Haemanthus are true bulbs that grow in arid southern Africa, Scadoxus are often rhizomatous and grow in the more tropical parts of the region.
//
This is Scadoxus puniceus and it’s quite a sight to see in full bloom. It’s not fragrant, though... learned that the hard way.

This is another Passiflora that falls under the ru This is another Passiflora that falls under the rugosissima and sexflora confusion. This P. aff. rugosissima is from Baja Verapaz, Guatemala and exhibits traits from both species. The leaves even kind of look like those from the Xerogona section (sanguinolenta, citrina, capsularis, rubra, etc).
//
The dainty flowers and batwing foliage make this a lovely but modest sight to see in summer. It blooms profusely when it’s warm enough.

***Rare Plant Watch*** Amorphophallus titanum is o ***Rare Plant Watch***
Amorphophallus titanum is often regarded as the largest and most spectacular member of its genus. It attracts millions to its malodorous once-in-a-decade floral display. But in reality, it’s not the largest Amorphophallus species—not even close.
//
Meet Amorphophallus sculptuata, a species that truly dwarfs everything else its genus... and family!
//
Originally native to Indonesia like its tiny cousin, this species is unfortunately now extinct in the wild due to changes in climate. This giant’s native range was restricted to the mid-elevations of Puncak Jaya, Indonesia’s tallest mountain, which due to its colder weather, just happens to mirror the climate of our home, Portland, OR.
//
In 2015, thanks to a partnership between @portlandparks and @trimet, the only known living specimen (a 2 ton dormant corm grown at an undisclosed location in Hillsboro) was planted at the SW Moody MAX Station as the finishing touch to PDX’s newest bridge: the Tilikum Crossing. Overnight the massive inflorescence burst from the ground in what was supposed to be a multi-year display, but as little information exists about A. sculpturata, it was soon discovered to be self-fertile, which caused the plant to set fruit soon after.
//
It takes 7 years for the fruit of A. sculpturata to ripen—turning green to red—which is why its wild population never rebounded. As you can see, we’re very close to collecting the seeds of the rarest Amorphophallus species in the world!
//
Next time you cross the Tilikum Crossing, witness the majesty of Portland’s newest crowning achievement. We’ll be planting one at PBG!

Passiflora rugosissima is a very variable species Passiflora rugosissima is a very variable species that is often incorrectly placed under the species P. sexflora. Both species overlap quite a bit in their ranges across Latin America, not to mention they have similar goat-foot-shaped leaves and multi-flower inflorescences.
//
While tiny, green flowers might not be everyone’s thing, there’s something truly intriguing about the evolutionary paths and purposes they serve. Insects see UV light and we know that the visible colors reflected off of flowers that we see are dramatically different from the colors they see, so what does green look like to them?
//
The native habitat of this variety of P. rugosissima ranges from southern Mexico (around Chiapas) to northern Guatemala.

There are almost 700 species in the genus Passiflo There are almost 700 species in the genus Passiflora and while most of them grow as herbaceous vines there are around 60 species that are woody. The members of this group are referred to as Astrophea (subgenus).
//
Astropheas range in habit from trees and shrubs to thorny woody lianas, and the flowers on some can even look similar to those in the genus Fuschia.
//
These are three seedlings of Passiflora macrophylla, a non-branching arborescent passionflower (10-20ft) with pendulous yellow and white flowers. As the name implies, the leaves of this species can reach an impressive 3ft long and 1ft wide. It’s native to the lowland tropical rainforests of Ecuador, although some have been found in Colombia.

We have some time for them to bulk up 💪🏼!

Meet our Land Acquisition Project Manager, Hilary Meet our Land Acquisition Project Manager, Hilary Hutler!
//
Hilary grew up immersed in the beauty of the Willamette Valley and its surrounding forests. Only after moving across the country in 2006 did she begin to understand the role that the Pacific Northwest—and its plants—played in her wellbeing. After returning to Portland, she enrolled in OSU’s Master Gardener Program (@mastergardenersosu), which sparked a career move into horticulture and landscape design.
//
Hilary is fascinated with the staggering variety of unique plants that can be grown in the PNW. She enjoys experimenting in her own garden with drought-tolerant species that thrive in our Mediterranean climate. She passionately believes that Portlanders must plant more large trees throughout the city to preserve a meaningful tree canopy and can get a little preachy about it.
//
As a proponent of lifelong learning, Hilary envisions PBG as a place not only where Portlanders will be inspired by botanical wonder, but also as a resource for sharing practical skills that will better connect us to our communities and the natural world.
